Seismic Cone Penetration Testing SCPTU

The SCPTU penetrometer is a modern soil survey device which is used for in situ soil investigations. It is equipped with a seismic cone that is said to be one of the most important geotechnical achievements of the last few years. Not only does it enable estimation of parameters like shear strength, the state of the ground and the stratigraphical characteristic of the subsoil, but it also allows estimation of the dynamic modulus of soil ground deformation and their continuous changes.

The SCPTU penetrometer is of great value in cases of linear structures like road embankments or dams. It is also used in geotechnical surveys for important engineering structures such as bridges, overpasses or tall buildings, and is very useful in the determination of soft fine-grained soil layers in the ground. Material parameters estimated after SCPTU tests are very useful for the safe and economical design of geotechnical structures.

Parameters estimated after SCPTU tests: type of ground, ground conditions: ID lub IL, Ø, U, Su, mv, cv, k, G0, OCR.
