Vibro-Replacement

Used to improve weak subsoil strata by means of gravel or stone columns (also known as KSS).

Applied mainly to soft plastic clay and loam, also with some organic interbedding of small thickness (the method is not recommended for thick deposits of peat, gyttja or aggregate muds).

Consists in making aggregate columns in the ground by means of a probe-type vibrator, designed to core feed the filling material to the bottom of the cavity. The vibrator is driven into the ground to the designed depth. In addition, the penetrating action can be increased by the load from the machine. Next, the vibrator is pulled up in a reciprocal motion which causes the aggregate to fill the cavity. In order to prevent the vibrator from being stuck in the cavity, compressed air is fed throughout the pullback phase. While moving back down the vibrator pushes the material sideways and compacts the column.

The effect

  • Aggregate columns with diameters ranging from 0.6 to 0.8 m and depths reaching 20 m (however, effective performance is guaranteed only to 7 m) .
  • Increased load-bearing capacity of the subsoil.
  • Reduced settlement of the subsoil.
  • Accelerated self-consolidation of the subsoil thanks to high permeability of the columns.

Grouted stone columns (VSS) 

Used to improve subsoil by means of columns made with aggregate and cement.

Applied to very weak cohesive soil and highly saturated organic soil (with the exclusion of soil with acid pH reaction).

The technology consists in forming vibro-replacement columns with added cement slurry. The columns provide a load-bearing structure of moderate strength and do not drain the subsoil (they do not accelerate the process of consolidation).

The effect

  • Columns with stronger and more rigid shank than in aggregate-only columns.
